In July 2000, AR Diffusion installed the first Kanguro® in Belgium. It concerns a fully automated, miniature container park that can be aesthetically integrated in just about every setting, including close to residential areas. Users are given a magnetic card or chipcard that allows them to dispose of domestic waste in the Kanguro at any time of day or night. Thanks to this card it is possible to work on the principle of 'the polluter pays'.
The Kanguro® comes in two versions. With the 'Interrato' or 'Inside' version, only the control panel is visible. The panel console is connected with 8 underground containers, each with a capacity of 800 litres. After the user has swiped the magnetic card or chipcard, he or she can selectively dispose of glass, cardboard, plastic, aluminium, etc. The underground installation is hermetically sealed, preventing the escape of any odours. It is also equipped with a vertical refuse press and a weighing scale. In order to make optimal use of the available space, a horizontal press can be added. The Kanguro Interrato replaces 24 traditional containers of 1,200 to 1,500 litres capacity. The 'Fuori Terra' or 'Outside' version is erected entirely above ground and comprises a control panel and 8 containers of 250 litres each, equipped with vertical and horizontal presses and a weighing scale. The Outside version replaces 12 traditional containers.
Both versions of the Kanguro are completely computer controlled. Each Kanguro is connected to a computer centre via a modem computer centre and warns the operator once a container has reached its preprogrammed maximum capacity. The emptying of a Kanguro takes about 10 minutes. Animals and foreign objects cannot make their way in, and the whole installation is vandal-proof.
