The measurement and abatement of odour nuisance is an integral part of environmental protection. But until recently it was impossible to measure odours in an objective manner, primarily because of the standard unit of measurement. An increase or decrease of one odour unit simply meant a doubling or halving of the number of people who could register a specific odour. With the so-called "C-service", launched August 1st 1999, the odour intensity can be measured quickly, objectively and with great precision. The C-service expresses the test results in ppb of butane, in extremely precise increments to an accuracy of 40 ppb butane equivalent. Determining the odour intensity takes about an hour. The test results can be processed on site or in the laboratory. The instrument is very user-friendly and personnel therefore do not require any special training.
There are many applications for the C-service. The instrument is used for impact studies and evaluation of complaints. It can be used to detect sources of odour nuisance and to evaluate the treatment of discharges. The instrument is also applied for sensory materials testing. Industrial uses for the C-service include the evaluation of the effectiveness of purification systems or processes and the assessment of the odour of products.
