Since July 1999 a hydro-metal processing treatment has existed for the total recycling of alkaline and saline batteries. Revabat recovers the various fractions from all batteries. The plant can recycle up to 4000 batteries in a year.
The methodology combines mechanical processing (dry pulverisation) and a wet physico-chemical treatment. First, fractions such as metals and plastics are separated by pulverisation. Then fractions such as zinc and manganese are recycled. They are converted to raw materials for the electronics industry. This technique is applicable to all types of batteries, used or unused, with or without mercury and regardless of the format.
